NATIONAL CEP WOMEN'S CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN NOVEMBER

The CEP Women's Conference is being held in Ottawa on November 2-4. This conference brings together CEP women from across Canada to discuss issues relating to women in the workplace, and to develop practical strategies. Cindy Garofalo (Local 191 Staff), Irene Pohoréçka (Naylor Publications) and Kelly Mazur (Winnipeg Free Press) were elected as delegates at the last Local 191 general meeting.

The conference includes several workshops:

1. Breaking Down Barriers: Bargaining for Equality -- this workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to become more familiar with the political structures in our union -- both formal and informal, in order to get equality issues on the bargaining table.

2. Women and Globalization Ð How changes to jobs and the social safety net affect women on a global scale.

3. Changing Nature of Work -- This workshop looks at what contingent work is, why it is on the increase and how employers are changing jobs in our workplaces to make them more unstable and low paid.

4. Women Leadership within the Union -- Equips participants with the tools to do internal union organizing. How to lobby to get a resolution passed, how to get campaigns going.

5. Social Delegates (5 Women only) / (5 Women and Men) -- This workshop looks at how to support and deal with members who are struggling with invisible illnesses, addictions, family problems and other issues.

A report on the Conference will appear in the next newsletter, and members are encouraged to approach their delegates before the conference with questions and opinions.
